Theological Education
between the Times

-
CHALLENGE
A long-established model that stresses preparation for ordained ministry as a full-time job is showing many signs of strain. This new reality cuts across lines of denomination, race, politics, and region.
-
PROJECT
Theological Education between the Times (TEBT) gathers diverse groups of people for critical, theological conversations about the meanings and purposes of theological education.
-
MISSION
TEBT’s work is marked by two convictions:
To reason together about the ends of theological education, not just the means;
To do this work in diverse communities that respect difference and resist domination. -
PARTNERSHIP
We do not walk this road alone—
we walk en conjunto.
HTI Open Plaza presents a series featuring conversations with TEBT authors and excerpts of their books.

Ulrike (Uli) Horstmann-Guthrie is HTI Editor, TEBT Editor & Artist, and founder of Ulrike Guthrie Editing Services. She has been editing academic books, dissertations, articles, and papers in religion for 36 years. Horstmann-Guthrie has worked with HTI since 1997 to help scholars make their writing sing and communicate their ideas to a particular audience—mostly their dissertation committees! In HTI Journeys newsletter (June 2021), she reflects on what the past 25 years with HTI have meant to her and on the struggles that the COVID-19 pandemic brought to HTI scholars. READ MORE
Book Series
The Theological Education between the Times book series (Eerdmans) attempts to provoke smart, richly plural conversations about the highest ends of theological education that may be able to help readers understand and imagine what might come next—what might be born out of this time of transition. Each book in the series brings a particularity that reflects the distinct contexts and commitments of its author. The books come together as a cluster of thoughtful, faithful conversations about the meanings and purposes of theological education in this time between the times.
I would be hard-pressed to name any other resource that even approaches this series in its visionary outlook and wide perspective on the challenges and opportunities currently facing theological education. The authors represent an unparalleled selection of leaders in theological education whose views and experiences point to different paths into the future, all leading to true excellence and relevance in theological education.
